Having recently hosted two events to mark, and celebrate, the 15th Anniversary of AIGS, I found myself thinking back even further – to when the Progress presence in South Africa first began, way back in 1989!!!
I was reminded of this when 4 people from I-Soft attended our event at Spier Wine Estate on 14th May. Independent Software, as it was then, was one of the first Progress Application Partners and today is without any doubt the longest serving! It is now in the hands of a second generation of Lautenbach, Roly having handed over the reins to his daughter Roxanne a few years ago, and we are seeing renewed enthusiasm for taking advantage of the added features of today’s OpenEdge.
We, the Progress Community in South Africa, owe an awful lot to Uwe and Reinhard Hass for taking their leap of faith and introducing us to the Progress 4GL and Database, over 35 years ago! By the time I got involved as the Sales Director for Realtime in 1998, and then as the Progress Country Manager in 2000, my job was simply to build on the foundations laid by Realtime!
Ironically, we are at the same stage in the development of the Yellowfin market as Realtime was with Progress back then. I now understand what Uwe and Reinhard went through in building the Progress presence! It is tough and challenging but immensely satisfying. I hope, together with pride in their achievement, that is how they felt when they handed the reins to Progress in 2000!
We were extremely honoured with the presence of Stephan Leferink at our events, accompanied by Rupert Mathew and Andrey Shirokov. They effectively gave up an entire week in their very busy schedules to be here! However, based on their feedback, it was time well spent, and they were extremely impressed – “It was a great experience all around!”
The key to the “great experience” lay in the time that our customers and partners gave, in order to attend the events and host the customer meetings. We trust that you also felt it to be a “great experience all around!”
Thank you for your ongoing commitment and support. I am increasingly amazed by the successful longevity of the “Progress 4GL and Database” – now known as OpenEdge – and I am looking forward just as much to the future as I have enjoyed the past!
